Every time I met Ming-Yu Liu, he was wearing a black jacket and carrying a slightly worn crossbody bag. Ming-Yu Liu, currently Vice President of Research at NVIDIA, is the first manager in the company's history to rise from researcher to vice president. He leads one of NVIDIA's most important model initiatives: Cosmos, the world foundation model. Liu was born in Taiwan, China, and is an avid reader of Jin Yong's martial arts novels. Since the age of 18, he has studied under the renowned martial artist Ji Xu (a successor in the lineage of Li Shuwen, the "Divine Spear"), practicing Chinese kung fu to this day. Recently, he has also developed a new passion for ice plunges. Rising at around 4 a.m., Liu follows his routine of martial arts training—practicing stances and forms in solitude. After completing the full set, he immerses himself in an ice barrel to aid recovery. This rigorous training regimen stands in stark contrast to my impression of him—he appears humble and speaks in a measured, quiet voice. "The most important thing in Chinese martial arts is self-control," Liu says. "I'm not doing this to demonstrate destructive power.” In a sense, this reflects the competitive philosophy of both Liu and the massive infrastructure enterprise he represents. Throughout the interview, he repeatedly emphasized that he has no competitors, is not competing with anyone, and that everyone can be a partner. "What is competition? I have no intention of ‘killing’ anyone," Liu says. "Our mindset isn't about destroying others; it's about how we create markets. Do you understand what I mean?” "Jensen [Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's founder and CEO] often says we should create markets, not fight over existing ones. He says we should build zero-to-billion-dollar businesses—you might not make money initially, but when the business succeeds, it must be highly influential. You can't be satisfied with making $100 million a year—that scale is huge for many companies, but for NVIDIA, it's a distraction," Liu continues. "You have to tackle the most important problems and make the biggest contributions.” The market NVIDIA is "creating" is Physical AI—artificial intelligence for the physical world—and the world foundation model Cosmos is expected to play a pivotal role. The project was launched in 2024, and after more than two years, it has reached Cosmos 3. The core Cosmos team numbers fewer than 100 people, with a dotted-line reporting structure encompassing 200 to 300. Huang expressed his strategic resolve to Liu, telling him: "You just keep going until Cosmos 97.” Having lived in the United States for 20 years and worked at NVIDIA for 10, Liu still draws on simple Eastern wisdom to articulate technical concepts—for instance, comparing large models to traditional Chinese medicine, and frequently citing The Art of War's principle that "preparing on too many fronts weakens one's strength" to think through technical trends in world models. In this interview, we delved into the Cosmos series (especially the recently released Cosmos 3), world models, Physical AI, NVIDIA's competitive philosophy, organizational philosophy, and of course, the inescapable topic of Jensen Huang.
